The Online Course trains diplomats beyond the conceptual understanding of Multilateral diplomacy to develop and implement strategies with tangible impact on the delivery of their objectives. Participants will be prepared to take diplomatic opportunities presented via multilateral engagement

The international climate is continually evolving. New technologies have empowered a broad range of non-state actors, enhancing their capacity both to collect and analyse information and to broadcast their views. At the same time the return of traditional geopolitical agendas and great power rivalry has undermined international organisations from the UN and WTO to WHO. This module will analyse the challenges to international organisations and multilateral diplomacy, focusing on trade, the COVID pandemic and climate change. It will explore alternative bottom-up approaches to negotiating international norms of behaviour using internet governance and cybercrime as models and stressing the importance of multi-stakeholder diplomacy to engage the broad range of state and non-state actors.

Course Curriculum

The format of the online course in Multilateral Diplomacy consists of a comprehensive set of online modules available to diplomats, professionals, students and trainee diplomats. The topics within the course will correspond directly to the pillars of multilateral Diplomacy concept, therefore providing recipients with the most recent theoretical and practical knowledge in the area.
