Summary of the Course
Migration has become one of the defining issues of international relations. It shapes elections, trade negotiations, security cooperation and relations between neighbours. The Migration Diplomacy and International Immigration Policy course prepares professionals to work on it at every level, from high-level negotiations to the systems that put policy into practice.
The course follows the Republic of Orvania, a fictional state that is at once a country of origin, transit and destination. Participants advise its ministers, audit a proposed third-country processing agreement, negotiate a readmission deal in an interactive simulation, design a labour mobility protocol and plan the integration of new arrivals in one of its cities.
Each module combines short video lessons, real case studies and practical drafting exercises with model answers. Cases range from the UK-Rwanda partnership and the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum to US agreements in Central America, labour reform in the Gulf and climate mobility in the Pacific, each examined from the perspective of all the states involved and on the basis of the evidence.
Participants choose one of two tracks: Policy and Diplomacy, for those in foreign ministries, international organisations and advisory roles; or Operations and Administration, for those in immigration agencies, border and consular services, local government and NGOs.
